Dorsal Arete

Jagged Globe – Snow and Ice Climbing Course, Day 5.

On Friday, Tim, James and I headed up to Stob Coire nan Lochan aiming for Dorsal Arete. The plan was for James and Tim to lead the route and be as independent as possible. There was much greater visibility in the coire than Thursday – so we could see what other climbers were getting on. We saw a team backing off from Twisting Gully, a team on Chimney Route, a team on Innuendo and others over on Central Buttress somewhere.

Tim and James did really well on the route. James was really excited to tackle the crux arete as a lead without a ghost rope – so I had it ready, but he never asked for it, and I didn’t feel like he needed it. The work on dry tooling and foot placement precision earlier in the week paid off – and James and Tim were able to make use of the left tiny foot placement on the big move (the hardest move seemed to be placing the 120cm sling on the spike).

Well done James and Tim – a terrific day of independent climbing.
