Course Overview

These 2 days are designed to look at the specific skills needed by a hill walker to make them independent, competent , safe and confident in the British Mountains.

At the start of the course we will go over the experience and aspirations of each course participant, and finalise the course structure from there.

Topics covered can include:

  • Navigation – use of various maps, use of a compass, micro nav., macro nav.,
  • Navigation strategies for good and poor visibility
  • Navigation with GPS, or other technical aids, e.g. smart phone, watch, camera
  • Planning – use of relevant websites, e.g. MWIS, Met Office Mountain Weather Forecasts, SAIS, guidebooks
  • Suitable equipment for what is planned, including safety equipment
  • Decision making during planning and on the hill
  • Emergency procedures
