  • A reasonable level of fitness to enable 2-5 consecutive days carrying a rucksack, over rocky rough ground.

Course Overview

These 2 or 5 day courses are designed  to develop your competence, safety and confidence on rough scrambling mountainous terrain in the West Highlands, for example Glencoe or Ben Nevis.

At the start of the course we will go over the experience and aspirations of each course participant, and finalise the course structure from there. During each course we will try to maximise opportunities to climb classic scrambles, in the grade range I-III.

Topics covered can include:

  • Appropriate equipment selection, and safety equipment
  • Planning, making use of weather forecasts and guidebooks
  • Movement skills scrambling on rock – ascent and descent
  • Basic rope-work using rope, sling and karabiner
  • Use and selection of natural rock anchors
  • Suitable belaying techniques
  • Retreat using the rope – options, including abseiling
  • Route Choice, decision making and risk assessment
