These courses are designed to cover the main basic skills needed for any winter walker to be safe in the British Mountains in winter conditions.

  • Summer hill walking experience
  • Reasonable fitness level for 2 winter days (more demanding than typical summer days)

Course Overview

These courses are designed to cover the main basic skills needed for any winter walker to be safe in the British Mountains in winter conditions.

Topics covered could include:

  • Selection of clothing and gear, including safety equipment
  • Rucksack packing and efficiency, personal organisation and management
  • Planning – the use of maps combined with current snow conditions and weather forecasts
  • Use of relevant websites, e.g. MWIS, Met Office Mountain Weather Forecasts, SAIS
  • Route planning, route choice, safe travel techniques
  • Avalanche awareness and avoidance. Winter Hazards
  • Movement skills across, up and down steep snow, including kicking steps
  • Use of the axe including cutting steps
  • Self belay
  • Ice axe arrest
  • Use of crampons in ascent and descent
  • Emergency shelters, emergency procedures
  • Winter navigation techniques and strategies
