South Ridge Of Meall Cumhann

Today I was working for Atlas Mountaineering.
With today’s deteriorating forecast (with increasing temperatures, wind and rain in the afternoon) and with the availability of low level snow, Dilbinder and I headed for the grade II summer scramble of the South Ridge of Meall Cumhann in Glen Nevis. My hunch was that it would be almost covered in snow, so would present winter conditions – before the rain and rising temperatures returned much of it to ‘summer’ conditions this afternoon. The gamble paid off, and we had a fun scramble initially on wet rock, but then onto the snow covered rock, and melting ice. As we climbed, so did the temperatures and the lower snow slopes were melting fast in the increasing rain. By the time we completed the traverse of Meall Cumhann and the Steall circuit, and got back to the van, the hill looked very different with a rising snow line. A great day – a 1* route, a 3 glove day, and buckets of rain, and wind.
