Winter Mountaineering Skills
Posted by Max Hunter on 07th January, 2014
Sunday was my second day with the students of UL working for InMyElement. We headed up to the lower coire of Stob Coire nan Lochan to find a lower stable snow slope for looking at avalanche awareness and snow anchors. All the students managed to stay warm, happy and keen as we worked through the different topics. We incorporated the use of waist belaying with some leader falls (slides down the moderate slope!). Later we tried a journey up and around the upper coire – but quickly found the combination of battling with the wind, poor visibility and deep trail breaking too much, so we changed plans and called it a day – just getting to the van before daylight faded.
Thank you to the team for a great weekend of fun and more laughing than you would expect on a winter skills course.
On Monday I was at the Glenmore Lodge Induction day getting ready for some work there – and learning about their new TSP (transceiver/shovel/probe) trial. We also took a look at their avalanche transceiver training park. A great day – thank you (it’s good to know that it rains in the East as well – and Fort William doesn’t have a monopoly on rain!). Glenmore Lodge will be using with many students the new Pieps Sport transcievers.
