Leading And Rescues
Posted by Max Hunter on 12th November, 2014
Today I was working for the UHI West Highland College, and I was out with Callum, Blair and Jordan from ATM2. They are working towards their SPA and they have already led several outdoor trad climbs. Today in the wet weather, with wet rock, we started on 3 Pines in Glen Nevis. With a safety rope from me, Blair and Callum ‘led’ up to the belay. After everybody had completed their personal abseil to the floor we moved on to SW buttress to look at ropework and rescues. Moving on from what they were taught 2 weeks ago, we started with looking at Y hangs and practiced it on the flat, before taking turns to rescue somebody from a ledge on ‘Tear’. At one point Blairs’ prussic got jammed, to the stuck student (Callum) lent a hand rescuing the rescuer – there isn’t supposed to be so much laughter during a rescue! We spent the rest of the time before the rain looking at set ups for ropework and discussing ideas for group management. Thanks for a fun day.
