Ledge Route And White Out On Ben Nevis

On Sunday I met up with Dan and Martin. They wanted to go over their winter skills as well as do a mountaineering route on Ben Nevis, that they wouldn’t normally solo. They’ve done a huge amount of summer scrambling, but want to move into the winter environment. Sunday turned out to be a windy, wet day, although we were sheltered for much of the time on Ledge Route. However, by the time we topped out we were hit by the force of the wind, and immediately in a white out. Here was the only video I took at the time, and it’s not very good, but it shows what visibility was like – the long white part of the video in the middle is me doing a panorama. We navigated down to the Red Burn, then we had better visibility.

The route itself was covered in a thick snow blanket in the upper half. Winter is still here in the upper hills.
