Winter Returned last Friday night

Jagged Globe – Winter mountaineering and Private Guiding

Last Thursday, with Ed, I was out with Ben, Steve and Martin on their Winter mountaineering course. We managed to find a route suitable for their objectives in Number 4 Gully on the right buttress. The team, joined by Sam, chose to go rock climbing on the Friday at Polldubh. We had great day, but wanted to have more snow. That afternoon, as we drove away, it started to rain – which was snow on the hills.

So on Saturday, the hills above 600m were covered in fresh unconsolidated snow. This enabled winter climbers to enjoy their Saturday and have some great days out climbing. More snow fell through the weekend but by Sunday the snow was still unconsolidated, and there were still loose rocks in many places. I had a great day with Jo on Aonach Mor on the Saturday, and a brilliant day on CMD+No.4 Gully on the Sunday. With all the people about there were some climber initiated rock falls, notably the Number 3 Gully rock fall – so until the conditions consolidate – take care with the snow and loose rocks. But – it’s terrific to have the snow back.
